…and tears of light streamed down his elongated, silver face. They fell by the hundreds, landing as faint stars on the cheeks of spectators. There was beauty in his sadness…
Phase I_ Urban Planning
Studying the Fort Point site brought to the group’s attention many problems in the existing layout. Massive, vacant parking spaces along with poorly maintained/under-used buildings. Below a before and after shot can begin to speak on the drastic changes we suggested.
Phase II_Finding a Sacred Moment
Taking the floating centerpiece, which can be seen from across the channel, I chose to design a concert hall that could speak on the art of music and connect Fort Point to South End, Boston. The decision to design a center for music was also inspired by the fact that many churches today are being deserted or sold. The question of what is really sacred has come to mind far too often. In our modern society I’d speculate that music is one of those rare tools that can bring us closer to the intangible.
An isolated island, floating near a large vent building, the concert hall is meant to embrace the vertical “concrete mountains”. By shooting hundreds of steel rods upward, I created an interplay between the massive vents and my design. An individual experiences this as he crosses over the water between these two masses.
